GreenFieldData: IoRT Data Management and Analysis for Sustainable Agriculture

logoEU+MSCA

GreenFieldData is a project carried out under a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action – Joint Doctorate (MSCA Joint Doctorate), funded by the European Union, within Pillar I – Excellent Science of the Horizon Europe program. It starts in March 2026, and will finish in February 2031.

Coordinator: Sandro Bimonte, TSCF,  INRAE

GreenFieldData will train a new generation of researchers able to tackle digital and green transition challenges using a human-centric approach to ensure the robustness and relevance of the solutions responding to the specific needs of the EU market in a context of climate change and increasing socio-economic constraints. At a policy level GreenFieldData outcomes will feed in directly to the aims of the HE Strategic Plan 2025-2027, EU Partnership Agriculture of Data and Digital EU Program. GreenFieldData proposes a high-level interdisciplinary, inter-sectoral and international (triple ‘i’) research project and training network on new IoRT (Internet of Robotic Things) based solutions for sustainable agriculture

GreenFieldData will mobilize 14 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) enrolled in Double Degree Doctoral programmes at 12 host institutions across 7 EU countries. Moreover, 22 non-academic and 6 academic associated partners will complement and fully contribute to training the DCs.

The partners form a high quality network, Academic partners have previous research collaborations as outlined in a common vision paper. The ambitious project will provide the DCs with a unique toolbox of cutting-edge knowledge, tools and strategies which will boost their employability and benefit the next generation operational workforce (researchers, Digital Technologies (DTs) and agricultural stakeholders). The project results will also benefit EU innovation as the human-centric IoT devices&robotics data-based solutions tailored to EU context will enable the agricultural sector to assess and mitigate the impacts of climate change, and define new sustainable low input practices, thus increasing resilience and competitiveness.

Main training goal: GreenFieldData aims to educate a new generation of highly innovative researchers via Double Degree PhDs, trained to break the knowledge and technological gaps and silos between data science, data engineering, sustainable agriculture, and IoRT. This goal will be achieved by means of novel and tailored: 1) interdisciplinary knowledge in IoRT, digital technologies (DTs) and agronomy; 2) intersectoral and transferable skills to develop methodological and technological innovations in these disciplines; 3) actionable solutions for various real agricultural environments and stakeholders; and 4) international training approach and sharing, which is key to achieving sustainable agriculture at EU and global scales. Main outcome: young researchers with proven skills for a professional life as “creative, critical and autonomous intellectual risk takers”, with doctoral work research output that contributes to the development of world science and the innovation system in sustainable agriculture, IoRT, and data engineering and data science.

Main Research goal: GreenFieldData will develop new IoRT data engineering & data science solutions including the “human-centric” approach at all the stages of the data value chain. It will exploit big data, AI and advanced analysis methods for new climate assessment impacts and mitigation, and efficient low input farming practices (Fig. 2). For this it will consider 3 key characteristics of agricultural IoRT: IoRT data (variety, velocity, volume and poor quality), devices (in the field), and end-users (agriculture stakeholders, unskilled DTs users) are handled at all the stages of the data value chain: collection → cleaning → integration → storage → querying → analysis → interaction/visualization, and in several agronomic systems.

Main outcome: (i) Human-centric data management and analysis methods and tools for agricultural IoRT data (ii) Tailored sustainable agriculture solutions
